Chalkboards for Kitchens

Lately I’ve been a little obsessed with the idea of getting a chalkboard for my kitchen–with a cute antique frame. I’m convinced it would be fun to write the dinner menu on it each night, as a daily traditions (other meal-time traditions I love: prayer, candle-lighting, talking about our days, and of course, some pre-dinner wine for mama).

If I had a chalkboard, here’s what I would have written down for tonight (warning: It’s a very random dinner, but we all loved it–even the 1 year old!):

Smoked trout sandwiches on pumpernickel bread

Thick-sliced tomatoes with sea salt

Watercress salad

I’ve always loved chalkboard restaurant menus, like the one above from a little place in Lyon, France. My kids may be too young to read, and my meals are not fancy enough these days to warrent menu-writing, but I still adore the idea of printing up a menu each night, like we’re eating in a cafe! Am I off my rocker? No? OK, where can I find a cute chalkboard? I’m stumped. [Photo: AustinEvan]

You can just get chalk board spray paint and make whatever you want a chalkboard and then find a cute frame.

What a neat idea! Honey, pumpernickel bread is fancy in my book and certainly worthy of being written on a chalkboard.

    I found a few on Pottery Barn’s website http://www.potterybarn.com/products/framed-chalkboard/?pkey=chome-office-organization

Your idea is far from crazy. It’s fabulous and fun. My family would love this . I think if you get some blackboard paint you could make one yourself easy.

What a great idea, I love chalkboards. You can usually get a chalkboard from a dollar store and then just get a nice, antique-looking frame somewhere else.

Such a great (and pretty) idea! We have a white board here but it’s not really used for much…

I’d love a chalkboard to write my ‘honey do’ list.

I love the idea of writing your own dinner menu on a chalkboard. I’ve been obsessed with chalkboard paint lately – you can paint almost anything. Two coats, wait four hours, two more coats – done. Sometimes I like the smudged chalkiness, but if you want a really dark board and bright chalk, wipe with a really soppy wet rag, immediately wipe that up with a clean rag and soak your chalk before writing. The writing will look a bit pale at first, but in a few minutes will turn bright white.

Your random dinner sounds delicious. Love smoked trout…
